The illustration on the front of this early 1920s, post-World War I postcard is untitled. It depicts a powerful but bruised boxer standing with his head tilted back, basking in his victory over a vanquished opponent who lies at his feet, face down, and dripping blood onto the floor of the boxing ring. The victor is wearing a Christmas wreath that doubles as a victory laurel. The boxer’s black boots have white and red trim, and the three colors match the Imperial German flag. Given the mailing date to a party in Austria and the message referencing “fellow German,” TFM concluded the postcard is German and depicts the emotional defiance of many Germans who were hurting in the aftermath of war and enduring a turbulent period in their nation’s history.
